General Information

Phylloxylon perrieri is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 12 metres tall. The bole can be up to 50cm in diameter[].
The tree is commonly harvested from the wild for local use of its very hard, durable, wood.
The plant is widespread but uncommon in west Madagascar. It occurs within extremely fragmented and decreasing patches of vegetation. This species is selectively and intensively felled for its construction properties and for fuel and a rapid decline in its population is expected. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is pale reddish brown; it is distinctly demarcated from the yellowish sapwood. The wood is very heavy, very hard and elastic. It is traditionally used for house construction, furniture, agricultural implements and tool handles, but it is also suitable for long lasting poles and heavy-duty flooring[].
The wood is used as fuelwood and for making charcoal[].
