Phyllanthus matitanensis has a large area of occurrence in Madagascar. Even though it occurs within protected areas, it experiences decline in parts of its range due to habitat destruction by annual wildfire and mining. At present the plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2015)[
