General Information

Peltogyne angustiflora is a deciduous tree with a dense crown; it can grow 15 - 25 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 40 - 60cm in diameter[].
The tree produces a high class timber and is often harvested from the wild. It has an ornamental crown and so is also sometimes grown in gardens etc[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is purple in colour, becoming darker when exposed to the air. The wood is thin-textured, moderately heavy, hard, with a high degree of resistance to the attacks of wood-eating organisms. Easy to work with, and of high quality, it is used for luxury cabinet making, parquet flooring, billiard cues, wooden bearings etc; and for outdoor purposes such as poles, railway sleepers, bridges, house construction etc[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a hard seedcoat and, unless sown when fresh and still moist, may benefit from scarification before sowing to speed up germination. This can usually be done by pouring a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 12 - 24 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a nick in the seedcoat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours before sowing. Sow in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A good germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 25 days[]. When the seedlings are 6 - 7cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 9 - 11 months later[].
