The tree is harvested from the wild for its fruit and may also be harvested as timber.
Although restricted to northern Borneo, Payena gigas has a relatively large range and some individuals can be found in protected areas. There are major threats to the forests of Borneo, however, and so this species needs to be monitored. The plant is currently classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2019)[
