General Information

Mimusops andongensis is a shrub or a tree with a dense, strongly-branched crown; it can grow up to 20 metres tall. The bole is up to 100cm in diameter, but usually much less. All parts of the plant contain latex[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of wood.

Edible Uses

The fruits are used as an alternative for chewing gum[]. The yellow to orange fruit is a globular berry about 10mm long, pointed at the apex, and containing one seed[].

The latex from the bark is used to flavour palm wine[].

Medicinal

The latex from the bark is used to treat malaria and as a penile stimulant[].

Other Uses

The wood is very hard. It is valued locally (especially in Nigeria) for building purposes, making canoes, axe handles and for carving[, , ].
