General Information

Miconia cinnamomifolia is an evergreen tree with an open, roundish crown; it can grow 15 - 22 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 30 - 50cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood. I t can be used as a pioneer in reforestation projects and is an ornamental tree that could be used for landscaping in parks and large gardens[].

We have no specific information for this species, but the small, blue, purple or black fruits of many, if not all, species in this genus is edible[]. The blue, globose berries are 3 - 5mm in diameter[].

Other Uses

The heartwood and sapwood are not clearly demarcated. The wood is medium-textured, moderately heavy, with moderate mechanical properties and durable if kept dry. It is used in construction for purposes such as rafters, beams and boards; and also for external purposes such as poles and railway sleepers[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. The seed is very small and should only be covered with a very thin layer of soil - cover the soil with a cheese cloth to avoid washing the seeds away when watering, removing the cloth as soon as germination is evident. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within a few weeks[]. When the seedlings are 2 - 4cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 6 - 7 months later[].
The seed has a short period of viability in storage[].
