Mammillaria tonalensis is a spiny, evergreen, cylindrical cactus freely clustering from offsets to produce large clumps. The slender, cylindrical stems can be erect or sprawling, 120mm or more tall and 20 - 35mm in diameter[

The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine. It s sometimes grown as an ornamental.
Mammillaria tonalensis is a poorly known species. All seven collections are from the same area, which appears to indicate that it may have a very small range. However, the species grows in a relatively inaccessible habitat that does not appear to be under any threat, hence there is no decline. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2017)[
