General Information

Magonia pubescens is a deciduous tree with a dense, vase-shaped crown; it can grow 5 - 9 metres tall. The bole can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of wood. It can also be used as a pioneer species for restoring woodland in drier areas and poor soils. A very ornamental plant with attractive, lacy leaves, it is suitable for use in landscaping, especially as a street tree[]. The attractive seeds are used in dry floral arrangements[].

Known Hazards

An infusion of the root bark is put into rivers or lakes to stupefy the fish and thus make them easy to catch for food[].

Cultivation Details

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in individual containers. A high germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 25 days[]. The seedlings grow away moderately quickly and should be ready to plant out 6 - 7 months later[].
The seed has a short viability of less than 90 days in storage[].
