Results of DNA analysis in various studies (see, for example, R.B. Figlar & H.P. Nooteboom, Blumea 49: 87-100. 2004) have supported the concept that the various genera comprising the subfamily Magnolioideae would be more consistently treated as a single genus, Magnolia. This is the treatment followed here, though it is still not universally accepted[

A plant of higher elevations the wet tropics, it can also be cultivated in warm areas of the temperate zone[
]. It is found in the tropics at elevations from 1,500 - 2,400 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 30 - 37°c, but can tolerate 5 - 45°c[
]. When dormant, the plant can survive temperatures down to about -2°c, but young growth can be severely damaged at -1°c[
]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 3,000 - 4,000mm, but tolerates 2,200 - 5,000mm[
