Results of DNA analysis in various studies (see, for example, R.B. Figlar & H.P. Nooteboom, Blumea 49: 87-100. 2004) have supported the concept that the various genera comprising the subfamily Magnolioideae would be more consistently treated as a single genus, Magnolia. This is the treatment followed here, though it is still not universally accepted[].

General Information

Magnolia blumei is a small to medium-sized or fairly large tree with a dense, rounded crown; it can grow up to 40 metres[303. The bole is columnar, branchless for up to 25 metres, up to 150 cm in diameter, sometimes with small buttresses[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its timber, there has also been some experiments in growing the tree in plantations[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of low to moderately high elevations in the moist tropics, where it is found naturally at elevations from 450 - 2,400 metres[].

The tree has been planted at 3 x 1 - 1.5 metres in plantations, where a rotation of 35 years is recommended[]. During this rotation the mean annual volume increment is estimated at 12.1 m3/ha[].
In natural forest in West Java seedlings of M. Glauca have shown increments of up to 6 cm in diameter and up to 9 metres in height over a period of 5 years[].
The plant has been observed with flowers and fruits all year round[].

The tree has been used for reforestation and in Vietnam it has shown good potential in agroforestry[].

Other Uses

The brown wood is fine-grained, strong, durable and easily worked[]. Of good quality, it is used for house and bridge building, furniture, cement-bonded board, veneer and plywood[, ]. In Bali the wood is popular for making handicrafts and carvings[].
