Madhuca engleri is endemic to Borneo, where it has a fairly wide range, but is rather uncommon within that range. Almost 13% of tree cover within that range was lost in the period between 2000 - 2016, and this species is also harvested for its wood. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2019)[
