Licuala borneensis is an evergreen palm producing one or more short, unbranched stems 20 - 23mm in diameter. The stems are topped by a crown of 8 - 12 fan-shaped leaves 30 - 70cm across on petioles 40 - 100cm long[

The species is only known from an estimated three localities on the island of Borneo. Its total extent of occurrence (EOO) is approximately 1,390 square kilometres. The forest habitat in which it occurs is declining due to unsustainable logging and conversion of forests to plantations. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[
