The heartwood is dark red to chocolate-brown or nearly black, usually with fine pencil striping of parenchyma; it is sharply demarcated from the yellowish-or pinkish-white sapwood. The texture is medium to coarse; the grain straight to very irregular; lustre is medium to low; it is without distinctive odour or taste. A strong, heavy wood that is durable and highly resistant to attack by decay fungi; It is difficult to work, but finishes smoothly. It is used especially in turnery, where it works very well; and is also used locally in heavy construction work[
