General Information

Lantana ukambensis is an unarmed, often multi-stemmed, perennial plant. The more or less woody stems are up to 2 metres tall[].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild as a local source of food, medicine, insect repellent and for fuel. It is also sometimes grown as a hedge and ornamental plant[].

Habitat

Grassland and wooded grassland (with Combretum spp.); open woodland (including Brachystegia); old cultivation; sometimes amongst granite rocks; bushland, and secondary bushland; at elevations from 100 - 2,100 metres[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A sweet flavour, they are much liked by children[]. The blue-purple, rounded, shiny berries are 2 - 4mm in diameter, containing one seed[].

Medicinal

The leaves are chewed or pounded and soaked in warm water and the liquid is drunk to treat coughs, fever and sores in the throat and on the tongue[].

The roots are boiled in water and drunk in the treatment of rheumatism and generalized body pains[].

Agroforestry Uses:

The plant is suitable as an ornamental hedge[].

Other Uses

The leaves are used an as insect repellent[].

The stems are used for starting fire and as torches[].
