General Information

Kielmeyera variabilis is a semi-deciduous tree with an elongated crown; it can grow 3 - 6 metres tall. The short, slightly crooked bole can be 20 - 30cm in diameter with a very rough, thick, corky bark[].
The tree is sometimes gathered from the wild as a local source of wood. It has a bizarre shape and beautiful flowering, so should be a useful ornamental, though not used as such at present[].

Cultivation Details

Prefers a sunny position[]. Succeeds in dry and poor soils[]. Established plants are drought tolerant[].

Other Uses

The wood is light in weight, soft, with a loose tissue, of low durability when exposed to the weather. Easy to work with, but of small dimensions, it is used for making low value items such as light boxes and toys[].
The wood is used for fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a sunny position in individual containers. The seeds sprout within 30 - 60 days[]. The seedlings grow quite slowly and will take a further 10 - 11 months before they are ready to plant out[].
