General Information

Hornstedtia pininga is a perennial plant producing a cluster of unbranched leafy stems up to 3 metres tall. The stems are produced from a woody, branched rhizome that is supported above soil level by means of stilt roots that can be 30 - 200 cm long. The plant sometimes climbs up trees[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food.
