The heartwood is reddish brown with concentric greenish zones which turn nearly black with age; the thin band of sapwood is grayish white and subject to sap stain. The texture is fine to medium; the grain fairly straight. The wood is very hard; very heavy; durable. It is used locally for structural timber, railroad ties, bridge construction, and other purposes where a strong and durable wood is required[
