Helicia attenuata is often just a shrub 1 - 5 metres tall, though it can also become a tree up to 20 metres tall. The bole can be up to 30cm in diameter[

Found in primary and secondary rain-forest, growing by streams, on hill slopes or mountain ridges; mainly in the montane zone from 650 - 1,700 metres, but sometimes descending to the lowland or ascending up to 2,650 metres[
