This species, often considered to be a synonym of Guatteria schomburgkiana Mart., has been treated as distinct in Maas P.J.M et al; Confronting a morphological nightmare: Revision of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae); Blumea Vol. 60 1 - 219; 2015[].

Guatteria bernardii is an evergreen that can grow from 8 - 15 metres tall. The bole can be 15 - 40cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a source of wood and fibre, and probably also as a food.

The fruit of the closely related Guatteria schomburgkiana (see nomenclature notes above) is edible and has a sweet flavour[]. It is very likely that the fruit of this species can also be eaten[[]. The fruits are produced in bunches of around 25, each fruit is around 8 - 10mm long and 5mm wide containing a single large seed[].
