Gigantochloa ridleyi is an evergreen, perennial, densely clump-forming bamboo growing up to 18 metres tall. The erect, woody culms can be 100mm in diameter with internodes 30 - 47cm long[, ].
The plant is harvested for its stems, which are used in construction. The plant is often grown as an ornamental.

Bamboos have an interesting method of growth. Each plant produces a number of new stems annually - these stems grow to their maximum height in their first year of growth, subsequent growth in the stem being limited to the production of new side branches and leaves.
