Garcinia pedunculata is a tree with a lax, oval crown; it can grow around 10 - 20 metres tall. The trunk is fluted; the bark is thick and corky[, ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and food. It is sometimes cultivated for its fruit in Bangladesh[, ].

Cultivation Details

A dioecious species, both male and female forms usually need to be grown if fruit and seed are required[]. At least some dioecious Garcinia species, however, are able to produce fertile seed even in the absence of fertilization (asexual reproduction). Such seeds would be expected to be genetically identical to the parent[]

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw or cooked[, ]. Pleasant to eat raw[]. A very acid flavour, it can be dried and used as a substitute for limes[]. The sliced fruits are dried in sun for consumption in curries or used as a pickle or as a flavouring in juices[]. One of the larger fruits in the genus, the yellow, oblate fruit is around 10 - 18cm long and 11 - 20cm wide, containing 8 - 10 kidney-shaped seeds[, ]. It can weigh up to 900g[].

The fruit helps to cure stomach problems, diarrhoea and dysentery, besides acting as digestive and cooling agent.[]

Other Uses

The plant exudes almost no resin when cut[].

The raw or cooked fruit can be used as a fixative or as a mordant for saffron dye[].

The wood is moderately hard. A good timber, it is used for planks, beams etc[, ].

Propagation

Seed - we have no specific information on this species, but the seed of most members of the genus can be slow to germinate, even if sown fresh, often taking 6 months or more[].
