This species is of doubtful status. The name was published without a valid description or a type specimen in Árvores Brasil page 259 in 1992[].

General Information

Eugenia leitonii is a semi-deciduous tree with an open, pyramidal crown; it can grow 8 - 14 metres tall. The cylindrical bole can be 25 - 40cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for its edible fruit, though this is not widely appreciated[]. It is also sometimes grown as an ornamental, being valued especially for its stunning, red trunk[].

The sapwood is distinct and well developed. The wood is heavy, compact, soft, elastic, durable. It is used for fine cabinet making, general and naval construction etc[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in individual containers. A very high germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 40 - 80 days[]. Seedlings grow slowly and will be ready for planting out about 10 - 11 months later[].
