Common Name: Copacabana Guava

General Information

Copacabana guava is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a low, rounded, dense crown; it can grow 4 - 7 metres tall. The short, slightly grooved bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter[, ].
The edible fruits are sometimes gathered from the wild for local use, though they are not widely appreciated[]. The plant is also sometimes grown as an ornamental within its native range[].
The plant is under threat of extinction in the wild due to destruction of its habitat for homes etc[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A thick, orange, fleshy, succulent pulp with a sweetish but not very pleasant flavour[]. The fruits are up to 4cm in diameter[].

The wood is of average texture, straight-grained, moderately heavy, hard, slightly susceptible to wood-eating organisms[]. Because of its small dimensions, it is only used for fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A germination rate of around 70% can be expected, with the seed taking more than 6 months to sprout[].
