Eucalyptus jensenii is a plant of the semi-arid to moist tropical zone of northern Australia, where it is found at elevations up to 600 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 22 - 34°c, but can tolerate 13 - 43°c. It does not experience frosts. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 550 - 1,300mm, but tolerates 400 - 1,550mm. Rainfall is markedly seasonal with a dry season of several months[, ]..
Requires a sunny position, succeeding in a range of light to medium-textured, well-drained soils of low fertility[]. Tolerant of dry soils[]. Found in the wild on sandy or gravelly soils on gentle to moderate slopes[]. Prefers a pH in the range 5.5 - 6.5, tolerating 4.5 - 7[].
The plant develops a lignotuber - this is a woody tuber that starts to develop near the base of seedlings and can become massive in the mature plants of some species. It possesses embedded vegetative buds, allowing the plant to regenerate following crown destruction, for example by fire[].
The tree is moderately fast-growing[].
Trees respond well to coppicing[[].
Trees can commence flowering within 3 years from germination of the seeds[].
This species is one of the ironbark group of Eucalypts. The resin exudes into the bark then hardens making the bark very haed and difficult to cut through with primitive tools[].

Other Uses

An essential oil is obtained from the leaves. Total quantity of the oil, and its composition, can vary widely from plant to plant, but we have reports that the fresh leaves contain around 0.1 - 0.3% essential oil. The main component is jensenone (around 70%)[].

The wood is hard, heavy and durable. It is used for posts and poles[, ].

Propagation

Seed - surface sow in a sunny position and make sure the compost is not allowed to dry out[, , ]. Species that come from high altitudes appreciate 6 - 8 weeks cold stratification at 2°c[]. Pot up the seedlings into individual pots as soon as the second set of seed leaves has developed, if left longer than this they might not move well. The seedlings are ready for planting in the field when they are 25 - 30 cm tall, usually after 3 - 4 months.
