The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine
Embelia keniensis was last collected in 1988. On the Mutonga river this species was not found after repeat surveys in the area. However, there is imprecision on the exact collecting locality of the specimen from Mutonga river. There is also anecdotal evidence from the Limuru area there have been 30 plants that have been found in people's gardens. The plant is classified as 'Data Deficient' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[
