This name is not universally accepted. We have followed the treatment in African Plant Database[] and others, but some botanists are rejecting the Genus name Elaeodendron and are merging it with Cassine[]. In that case, this species will be Cassine australis (Vent.) Kuntze[].

Elaeodendron australe is an evergreen shrub or a small tree that can grow up to 12 metres tall. The bole can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a source of wood. A very ornamental plant, it can be grown in gardens[].

Cultivation Details

Grows well on dry and marginal sites[]. Requires a well-drained soil[]. Tolerant of maritime exposure, though it grows slowly and may become no more than a stunted shrub in very exposed positions[].
Generaly a slow-growing tree[].
Generally a dioecious species, with both male and female forms needing to be grown if fruit and seed are required, though there are forms in the north of its range with bisexual flowers[].

Other Uses

The wood is white veined, hard, close-textured. It is used especially for cabinet making[]. Used for the manufacture of staves, oars and shingles[].

Cuttings are slow to take root[].
