General Information

Dysoxylum malabaricum is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 - 40 metres tall, sometimes even more. The straight bole can be free of branches for more than three quarters of the tree's height and 100cm in diameter[].
Dysoxylum malabaricum is a locally economically important tree species, endemic to the Western Ghats. It is a sacred tree that is harvested from the wild and used for medicinal, nutritional, commercial, and religious purposes[].
The tree is much exploited from the wild and natural regeneration is poor. Although this species has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List, it is has already been categorized as Endangered under the Indian National Threat Assessment using the same criteria as the IUCN[].

Medicinal

The fruits and wood are used in traditional medicine[].

A decoction of the wood is useful in the treatment of arthritis, anorexia, cardiac debility, expelling intestinal worms, inflammation, leprosy & rheumatism[].

The wood oil is used in treating ear and eye diseases[].

Research has shown that compounds in the tree may be effective against malaria mosquitoes[].

Other Uses

The wood is a source of essential oil and is also used to make incense sticks[].

The wood is highly reputed, its lustrous and sweet-scented wood is highly valued for various woodworks[]. It is an important constituent in the perfumery and ply wood industry and is also used for making motor truck bodies, furniture, carts, railway carriages toys and textile wooden accessories like bobbins. It is also good for cooperage, especially tight cooperages and for the frame work of carts and carriages[].

Propagation

Seed - sow fresh in a nursery bed with a sand to soil ratio of 3:1. Germination of around 50% should take place within 70 days. Seedlings can reach 30 - 35cm tall within 12 months and are then ready to plant out in the field[].
