General Information

Duguetia megalophylla is a tree (occasionally more shrub-like) usually growing around 3 - 10 metres tall, occasionally to 15 metres, The bole is around 5 - 7cm in diameter[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of wood.
Duguetia megalophylla has a moderately large range, but is only known from less than ten localities, These localities are threatened by general habitat threats to lowland areas including logging and human development. This is causing continuing decline. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2022)[].

Edible Uses

We have no reports on the edibility of this species, though if the fruit has a fleshy pulp then that will be edible[]. The green to yellow fruit is ellipsoid, around 45 - 70mm long and 40 - 60mm in diameter, comprising 130 - 180 fertile carpels each 13 - 20mm long and 4 - 11mm in diameter[].

Medicinal

The stembark is used to treat snakebite[]. A decoction of the bark is used to treat snakebites and bites of the 24 hour ant (Paraponera clavata)[]. The (inner?) bark scapings are sucked upon to ease the pain[].

Other Uses

The wood is used to make arrow heads[].
