General Information
Drynaria quercifolia is a robust, deciduous, epiphytic fern with a long, creeping rhizome, growing up to 1 metre tall. It produces two types of annual frond - short, sterile ones up to 40cm tall that remain on the plant for several years and have a main purpose of trapping organic material to provide nutrient for the plant, and taller fertile shoots that produce spores[

Many ferns also contain thiaminase, an enzyme that robs the body of its vitamin B complex. In small quantities this enzyme will do no harm to people eating an adequate diet that is rich in vitamin B, though large quantities can cause severe health problems. The enzyme is destroyed by heat or thorough drying, so cooking the plant will remove the thiaminase[
