The genus Dregea is not universally recognised. We are following the treatment in the African Plant Database[], but some other treatments place all species of Dregea in the genus Marsdenia, making this species Marsdenia schimperi Decne.[].

General Information

Dregea schimperi is a climbing plant, producing stems up to 15 metres long that scramble over the ground or twine into the surrounding vegetation[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of a tying material.

Known Hazards

In Somalia the plant is considered poisonous to stock, causing animals to stand stiffly, to shake and have diarrhoea[]. Death follows in most cases[].
