General Information

Dicraeopetalum mahafaliense is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing up to 12 metres tall. The bole can be up to 45cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.
Restricted to a small area of around 18,000 km² in southern Madagascar, its habitat is already fragmented and grazed and is continuing to be cleared. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is red-brown; it is distinctly demarcated from the 2 - 3cm wide band of yellowish sapwood. The grain is straight, texture fine. The wood is very hard and it dries slowly. It is stable when dried and takes a good finish. The heartwood is durable and is resistant to fungi, Lyctus beetles and termites. The sapwood is not durable.The wood is used for house construction, flooring, interior and exterior carpentry, cabinet making, framing, turnery and tools[].
