General Information

Diatenopteryx sorbifolia is a semideciduous tree with an open, narrow crown; it can grow 15 - 30 metres tall. The straight, fluted bole can be 50 - 70cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its good quality wood. It can be grown as a pioneer when restoring native woodland and, as an ornamental tree a narrow crown, it can be used for street planting[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is reddish; it is not clearly demarcated from the sapwood. The wood is fine to medium-textured, straight or cross-grained, moderately heavy, hard, elastic, of low durability when exposed to the elements. Of good quality, it is used for pressed plates for decoration, carpentry, internal finishing in buildings, parquet flooring etc[, ].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 10 - 15 days[]. When the seedlings are 4 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 4 - 5 months later[].
