General Information

Dialium englerianum is an evergreen tree with a somewhat rounded crown; it can grow 6 - 23 metres tall. The bole can be unbranched for 150 - 300cm and 10 - 30cm in diameter[, ].
The plant is often harvested from the wild for local use of its edible seedpulp.

Cultivation Details

Grows wild in deep, sandy soils[].
Although many species within the family Fabaceae have a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, this species is said to be devoid of such a relationship and therefore does not fix atmospheric nitrogen[].

Edible Uses

Seedpod pulp - raw[, ]. The ovoid, slightly flattened seedpods are 20 - 25mm long. They have a thin, brittle shell that is easily cracked, and contain one (occasionaly two) roundish seeds embedded in a porous pulp which dries as the seeds ripen. This pulp can be eaten raw, or is mixed with water and drunk as a juice[].
