General Information
Daucus edulis is a monocarpic, perennial plant growing about 1.2 metres tall.
The plant is sometimes gathered from the wild for its edible root and medicinal virtues.
Daucus edulis is endemic to Madeira and Deserta Grande, where it covers a geographic range of just 226 km². It's habitat is declining due to infrastructure development, recreational activities and the invasion of exotic species. Collection, fires, droughts, storms, and landslides are all further threats to this species. Despite an increasing trend, the total population counts less than 50 mature individuals. It is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[

Propagation
Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in a greenhouse as soon as it is ripe if possible, otherwise sow it in early spring. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
