Cyperus dilatatus is a robust, perennial, grass-like plant growing from a stoloniferous rootstock; it produces a tuft of one to a few culms with somewhat swollen bases and growing around 40 - 70cm tall, spreading by means of long, slender stolons to form a loose colony[
