Monterey cypress is a plant of the warm temperate zone, though it has been cultivated successfully in the subtropics and at higher elevations in the tropics, where it can be grown at elevations up to 3,500 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 20 - 32°c, but can tolerate 6 - 36°c[
