Cryosophila nana is a single-stemmed, evergreen palm growing up to 5 metres tall. The unbranched stem can be 5 - 10cm in diameter; it is densely covered with root spines; and is topped by a crown of 6 - 13 fan-shaped leaves[

The plant is harvested from the wild for its edible fruit, which is used locally.
Much of the original dry forest along the coast is cleared or greatly altered as a result of logging and conversion to agriculture and settlements. Subpopulations have become scarce or have completely disappeared at lower elevations, though in relatively undisturbed areas in upper altitudinal limits the species can be common. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[
