Other Uses
The heartwood is red-brown to dark red; it is clearly demarcated from the 4 - 6cm wide band of sapwood. The texture is coarse; the grain straight or interlocked; the surface lustrous. The wood is very light in weight, very soft; somewhat durable, being resistant to dry wod borers but susceptible to fungi and termites. Because of growth stresses there is a risk of the wood splitting during felling; once felled it seasons rapidly with only a slight risk of distortion or checking; once dry it is stable in service. The wood can be worked with ordinary tools, though there is sometimes a blunting effect caused by the presence of silica; the surface is occasionally rough in places; veneers tend to tear; nailing and screwing are poor; gluing is correct. The wood is used for lower value items including boxes and crates, interior panelling nd joinery, furniture components, blockboard, fibre boards, veneer for plywood[
