General Information

Crateva magna is a shrub or a tree growing from 2 - 20 metres tall. Usually evergreen, in regions with a dry season it is shortly deciduous[].The bole, which can be straight or twisted, can be up to 20cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use, mainly as a medicine and source of wood. The plant is often cultivated as an ornamental, especially within its native range[].

Habitat

Edible Uses

Young fruit[]. The berry-like fruit has a leathery skin and pulpy flesh, it can be up to 5cm long[, ].
The young leaves, flowers and young fruits are used as vegetables[].

Medicinal

The juice from the bitter stem or root bark is used in decoction for stimulating the appetite or as a digestive, as a laxative against colic and as a febrifuge[]

The root bark is used to treat urolithiasis[]. The bark and roots are generally used against various female disorders or as a tonic[].

The fresh leaves are rubefacient and tonic[]. They are applied as a tonic and skin irritant against high fever[].

The bark is used to wash clothes[].

The wood is moderately hard[]. It is used locally for carving and to make household utensils, drums and match sticks[, ]. The wood-chips are made into a moderately strong and poorly water resistant hardboard[].
