The report of edible fruit for this species seems to be based upon a misspelling of the name of this species and of a very similarly spelled taxon. The report is under the mis-spelled name Corryocactus pulquiensis, and almost certainly refers to Corryocactus puquiensis Rauh & Backeb., which is a synonym of Corryocactus brevistylus (K.Schum. ex Vaupel) Britton & Rose. The edible fruit is described as being harvested in southern Peru (where Corryocactus brevistylus is native) whilst Corryocactus pulquinensis Cárdenas is native to Bolivia[].

General Information

Corryocactus pulquinensis is a spiny, succulent, evergreen climbing or creeping perennial plant with few branches. It can grow around 3 - 4 metres long with stems 3 - 4cm in diameter[].
The plant is possibly harvested from the wild for its edible fruit.
Corryocactus pulquinensis has a small range and is found in less than five locations. The whole area where the species occurs is affected by over-grazing by goats. In addition of the land being transformed and degraded by the goats, it is very likely that these eat the plants because their spination is not very strong. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].
