General Information

Combretocarpus rotundatus is a medium-sized to fairly large tree, usually growing up to 25 metres tall but with some specimens up to 40 metres[, ]. The unbuttressed bole, which is usually straight (though sometimes crooked and twisted), is up to 100cm in diameter[]. Clustered stilt roots are sometimes present[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for its timber, it is also grown as a living fence.

Habitat

Occurs most abundantly in secondary forest or forest with an open canopy, but there the trees are often small and of poor form[]. In Sarawak well-developed trees are found in peat-swamp forest associated with Shorea albida[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the lowland, moist tropics, usually found at elevations up to 100 metres, exceptionally to 300 metres[].
Grows on waterlogged soils of peat-swamp forest and kerangas[]. The plant is often found in the wild in Kerangas forest - a type of moist, heath forest found on acidic, sandy soils that are low in nutrients, especially nitrogen[].
The tree coppices vigorously, so regeneration of logged-over forest should pose no problem[]. Fallen trees usually develop adventitious shoots from the bole and these eventually develop into trees[].

Because they root easily, posts of the tree are sometimes used for live fencing[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is reddish-brown; it is clearly demarcated from the greyish-brown sapwood. The texture is coarse and uneven due to broad rays; the grain is straight or interlocked, with a silver grain figure on quarter-sawn material. The wood is moderately heavy, moderately hard to hard. It is locally highly favoured for heavy interior construction and railway sleepers, but needs preservation for the latter purpose. It is also used for temporary construction exposed to the weather, furniture, flooring, panelling, boat construction and sliced veneer, and also for agricultural implements[, ].
The wood is used for fuel[].
