This species used to be considered as ranging from Somalia to Mozambique, but it has recently (2007) been shown to comprise of two closely related but distinct species. Cola clavata is now considered to be endemic to Mozambique, whilst Cola pseudoclavata Cheek, is considered to range from Tanzania north to Somalia[, ]. It is almost certain that the two species can be used in the same ways[].

Cola clavata is an evergreen tree growing up to 30 metres tall. The bole often branches from low down[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood, which is used locally. It is suitable for providing shade and as a wayside tree[, ].
