General Information

Clusia fluminensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a wide, dense crown; it can grow 4 - 9 metres tall[, ]. The short, crooked bole can be 30 - 40cm in diameter[].
The plant has minor medicinal uses, and is sometimes grown as a hedge and ornamental plant[].

Cultivation Details

Succeeds in full sun or bright shade[, ]. Refers a fertile soil. A very wind tolerant plant, capable of withstanding salt-laden wind[].
Plants have a moderate rate of growth[].
This species is unique in that it belongs to the only genus of plants capable of absorbing carbon dioxide during the night[].
A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required.

A resin obtained from the stem is used in veterinary medicine[].

Agroforestry Uses:

A very wind-resistant plant, and amenable to trimming, it can be used as a shelter-providing hedge[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, irregular-grained, moderately heavy, with a good resistance to wood-eating organisms[]. The wood is of too small dimensions to be used for anything other than fuel and to make charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Only just cover the seed. A germination rate of 30% or more can be expected, with the seeds sprouting within 15 - 25 days[].
