General Information

Cayratia pedata is a climbing plant, the stems climbing into the surrounding vegetation and attaching themselves by means of tendrils[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local medicinal use. It is often sold in local markets in Sri Lanka[].
The population of this species is declining due to unsustainable collection and habitat loss. The combined effects of forest degradation and loss of forest cover over the last three generations (42 years) is estimated to have led to a population decline of more than 30%. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Medicinal

The leaves are used as astringents and refringents[]. The leaves have anti-arthritis activity[].

The whole plant (excluding the roots) has a low diuretic activity and has been used as a remedy for coughs, bronchitis, asthma, joint pain and to check uterine reflexes[].

The phytoconstituents present in this plant possess diuretic activities. The plant extract contains alkaloids, carbohydrates, steroids, tannin, phenolic compounds, flavonoids and terpenoids[].
