Cultivation Details

A plant of the tropics, where it is found at elevations from about 200 - 1,000 metres.

A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required.

The root is said to be antiasthmatic, antidote, antisyphillitic, astringent, diuretic, purgative and tonic[]. The root is reputed to be an antidote to a range of poisons, particularly of plant origin[]. The root is also used to combat epilepsy and perhaps also to treat pulmonary complaints such as catarrh, bronchitis and whooping cough[].

The plant is used in the treatment of epilepsy, attacks of hysteria, nervous afflictions of the uterus and most other nervous problems[]. It is also used in the treatment of syphilis[].
