Casuarina collina is a fast-growing, evergreen tree.
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a timber. It is also used in planting schemes to restore the land after open-cast mining.

This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[

At least in the early stages, however, it prevents the regeneration of the pioneer species of the mining scrub and therefore it is used mainly on the edges of slopes for landscaping purposes[
