The heartwood is pale brown; the thick band of sapwood is yellowish. The wood is rather fine-textured; moderately hard; heavy; tough; strong; fairly durable. It is fairly easy to work, though can be splintery; and finishes smoothly. When available in sufficient dimensions, it is used for railway crossties and house frames[
