General Information

Cassia hippophallus is a deciduous shrub or small tree, usually growing around 3 - 15 metres tall, occasionally to 20 metres. The bole is up to 50cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its wood. It is also reported as having medicinal properties.
Even though the natural habitat of Cassia hippophallus is threatened by habitat loss due to human activities such as shifting agriculture and fires which may reduce the number of mature individuals, it doesn't significantly affect the survival of the species. In addition, it is known to occur within ten protected areas.The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2019)[].

Habitat

Deciduous woodland and open scrubland, at elevations up to 500 metres, occasionally to 1,150 metres. It is often found in margins of woodland, where it is subject to regular fires. It has been recorded on sandy, clayey and limestone soils[].
