General Information

Campomanesia dichotoma is a deciduous shrub or small tree with an elongated, dense crown; it can grow 4 - 10 metres tall[]. The bole, which has deep grooves, is 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
The edible fruit is gathered from the wild for local consumption. The plant is grown in home gardens and has the potential to be used in reforestation projects[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the 'Caatinga' dry forest region of northeast Brazil. The climate is hot and dry, there are usually 6 to 11 months without rain each year. The mean annual rainfall varies from 250 - 1,000mm, and the mean annual temperature is from 24 - 26°c.
Prefers a sunny position[].
Newly planted young trees establish well and grow away rapidly[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A fleshy, sweet-astringent pulp[]. The purple, globose berry is about 15mm in diameter[].

A pioneer species within its native range, it has the potential to be used in reforestation projects[].

Other Uses

The wood is smooth-textured, irregular-grained, moderately heavy, slightly susceptible to wood eating organisms[]. It is used to make small objects and as lumber in general construction[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed[]. A germination rate in excess of 80% can be expected, with the seeds sprouting within 15 - 25 days[].
