Common Name: Guabiroba Rugosa

General Information

Gubiroba rugosa is a variable plant, existing in two main forms. One, var rugosa (O.Berg) Landrum, is an evergreen shrub, whilst the other, var schlechtendaliana, is an evergreen tree with a more or less pyramidal crown; it can grow up to 15 metres tall[, ]. The grooved bole can be 20 - 30cm in diameter[].
Both forms yield an edible fruit, which is sometimes gathered from the wild and used locally[]. The tree is sometimes cultivated in home gardens and has a potential for use in reforestation schemes[].

Habitat

Humid Atlantic rainforest near the coast and also inland in the hills. It becomes a tree in the forests, but is more shrub like when growing in more exposed areas near the coast[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A slightly acidic flavoured pulp]416]. The green, globose fruit is up to 3cm in diameter[, ].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, irregular-grained, heavy, hard to cut, resistant to wood eating insects[]. It is only used to make musical instruments and tool handles[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed[]. A germination rate in excess of 70% can be expected, with the seeds sprouting within 40 - 50 days[]. Seedlings grow away fairly quickly[].
